“Excerpts from 2013”: I am owning all the things you ever said to me
emotional and sexual abuse
“Excerpts from 2013” is a collection of abusive things my ex partner said to me during and after our relationship. Paired with my photography, it acts as a therapeutic documentation of the relationship.
I mean let us try not to inconvenience others! We are conditioned to feel that the worst thing we can do is to offend or hurt another person, even if it allows ourselves to be hurt immensely in the process.
Emotional manipulation methodically wears down self worth and confidence. The trust in my own perceptions had been entirely warped. Remember when you slapped me across the face in first year and then went on to praise me for defending myself and hitting you back? It was all subtle, smooth, quiet and shrouded in friendly propositions and flirty apologetic messages.
But there is power in resistance and anger. I must stop trying too hard to hold myself and others up to standards that I did not set myself. Courageous men don’t make excuses. This pain has changed me but will not define me. And although it is seemingly impossible to leave the past behind and to be rid of such immense pain, I can confidently state that I am whole. I am unstoppable.
